Karen Generazzo

  • Year: late 1960's
  • Instructor: just remember Mr. B
  • Section: Drill
  • Uniform: white blouse, brown skirt, pink cumberbund, white boots, brown beret
  • Music: Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang
  • Favorite Memories: Practice at the halll, marching down Broadway and competing. Also, remember singing "I'm a St. Therese Flower don't pity me, there ain't a judge in this vicinity, who'll open up their eyes and see the best, they say that we're as bad as all the rest, rest, rest, (not true!) and flowers when we march throughout the states and even though we know we're really great, but though the judges say we just won't do, then we know it's the Royal ______!" I sang that song so much that even though my sister Janice was not on the drill team, she remembers the song as well. My sister Lisa was also a Little Flower and from what she recalled, it was for a season or so; I guess it would have been in the 70's some time.

  • Instructor: Nancy Lee
  • Section: Flag
  • Uniform: Brown "freak" shoes & pink socks; brown pants with pink sequin strip down the leg; pink ruffled shirt with a brown vest, held together by a chain; brown Fedora hat which I loved! Tommy Lee was right, those hat pins were brutal!
  • Music: "I'm Coming Out" by Dianna ross; "I Ain't Gonna Cry Tonight" by Barbara Streisand; "The Weed"
  • Favorite Memories: I believe this was the year that the bus broke down on the way to Syracuse NY, on the George Washington Bridge, and we had to walk across it to the bar and wait for someone to come and take us to our hotel ...

Jennifer Higgins

  • Year: 1984
  • Instructor: Sorry ... I don't have a great memory ... maybe Linda?
  • Section: Rifle
  • Uniform: I have no idea what we were wearing. I was in the Juniors in '84
  • Music: don't remember the music either
  • Favorite Memories: I remember going to a regional in New York and the Junior's competed in the "A" class, against the Preps, and beat 'em!

Sandy Mitchell-Olivieri Remembers

  • Year: 1977-89
  • Instructor: Nancy Capodilupo-Lee; Denise Russell-Perry; Patty Murray-Elder; Lisa Stornaeilo-Brown; Linda Manzi-Corbett; Tommy Lee (and then there was that trip where Tommy, Peter & Kevin were our instructors! Thanks Guys!)
  • Section: American Flag; Flag; Sabre; Rifle
  • Uniform: did it all and wore it all over the years, but, I'm glad that pink & brown are becomming fashionable now. Didn't feel like it was back then ... LOL!
  • Music: my first year was "Parade of Pretty Girls" or something like that.
  • Favorite Memories: I marched my first competition in the Finals with a fever of like 102 and everyone thought my parents were horrible for bringing me to the show; but I had begged and pleaded with them to let me march ... SO they brought me. Thanks Mom and Dad.
  • More Memories: Colorguard was big in my life. It kept me busy and out of trouble. St Therese was like family. It was more than just practice and compete. It was also years full of great fellowship with great people ...Trips to Lincoln Park, Frank Davis, rollerskating, haunted houses, banquets, cookouts and so much more. This is what kids and families are missing today.

Donna Barbuto Remembers

  • Year: 1983?
  • Instructor: ?
  • Section: I was a Mom who always wanted to be a rifle, but, Mr. B said "no"
  • Uniform: ?
  • Music: ?
  • Favorite Memories: Trying to catch my daughter smoking. I had a mirror to watch her at the back of the bus. I never did catch her! I remember Tammi always complaining about her headband being too tight; I kept telling her that it wasn't. Meanwhile it left a mark for two days!
  • Editor's note: I remember Donna at practice one day trying to prove her worth as a rifle ... hilarious ... she actually looked up to check her ceiling clearance before making her "toss" ... let's just say that a 20' high ceiling clearance was not an issue ... thanks for the laugh Donna ... it remains a very fond memory for me!

Kim Zackular-Falvey Remembers

Patty Snook, Nancy Cap, Mary P, Lisa Pascarella, etc., to [edited] smoke butts (Kools). We got caught by Mrs. Pascarella and I had to sleep in the chaperone's room for the night.

Trish Kelley-Mullen Remembers

  • Year: 1965 - 1968
  • Instructor: Loralie
  • Section: American Flag
  • Uniform: started out with brown wrap skirts & white button-down cotton blouses with epilets. Later changed to white satin blouses with hot pink crossbars, collars and cuffs with hot pink gauntlets. Always wore the white boots which were handed back and polished (even if they didn't need it) to Mrs. Kelly, my Mom (another Mrs. Kelley), Chickie Marcella, Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. B
  • Music: summer was "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and winter was "Winchester Cathedral"
  • Favorite Memories: I was too small to be anything but a pistol or carry the banner in the parades; my sister, Eileen, was the youngest Junior Guard Captain at the age of 7 (she had a big voice). The next year St. Anthony's came out with twins who were 8. We got brown sweaters with cream trim and a small pink rose over the heart and our names were embroidered on the sleeve; my nickname was "Cornflakes" and they called my sister "Rice Crispies" (freckles). My Dad cut down Georgie Keefe and my sister's rifles and painted them all white. My Mom painted the peanut character flags and the first time we used them was in the St. Patrick's Day parade in South Boston. Ivy Keefe was Captain and the only one who got to wear her new uniform. It rained like anything and the colors in all the new flags and Ivy's new uniform ran and they all had to be re-done.
  • Favorite Memories: Bus rides; singing "High Hopes" and going to "Ted Hiltons"

Lisa Cummings-Liston Remembers

  • Year: ?
  • Instructor: Loralie; Pat Luongo; Mary Pothier; Nancy Capodilupo-Lee
  • Section: American Flag; Sabre; Rifle; Drill
  • Uniform: Pink & Brown; white boots & later brown boots
  • Music: "Sound of Silence"
  • Favorite Memories: I still remember walking into the Parish Hall to sign up for the drill team. I had no idea what I was going there for, but, my Mom mentioned something about a slush fund. I was so disapointed when I found out there wasn't any slush at practice!
  • Favorite Memories: Remember when we left a summer competition and right after we marched, we went to NYC? When we arrived at the hotel, we found out we had placed first. I thought the bus was going to tip over because of how much we rocked it. How about thedice earring we found at the Taft hotel? I think one of the girls still has it (ha ha)

Carla Colantuoni-McCarthy Remembers

  • Year: 1975?
  • Instructor: Nancy Cap
  • Section: Sabre
  • Uniform: white boots, pink skirt and pink shirt; brown cumberbun and sash; brown tam with groffy pom-pom
  • Music: I believe "All the Pretty Girls"
  • Favorite Memories: when my sister told Mr. B she was sick and skipped out of practice. Mr. B dropped me off at my house and my Mom was on the porch and Mr. B asked how Donna was feeling; she said "fine ... she's out" ... so busted; not the smartest move on her part. Mr. B only lived 5 houses down from us.

Karen Dorney-Cassidy Remembers

  • Year: 1967
  • Instructor: Pat Longo
  • Section: Flag, Sabre
  • Uniform: Pink shirt and Brown skirt
  • Music: ?
  • Favorite Memories: remember when we went to Washington DC? Remember when we started waring the long brown boots? We thought, hey, we're the coolest. Singing songs on the bus on the way home from anywhere - Mary Pothier and Susan Williams always knew the words. Good Times!

Carol Staffieri-Puopolo Remembers

Just wanted to share that I have been back to Ted Hiltons for the past 3 years. Pretty run down, no coo coo, but everything else was the same. Last year, the Johnsons sold the resort to the State. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE PLACE FOR A REUNION ...

Carol Staffieri-Puopolo Remembers

  • Year: 1968
  • Instructors: Lorilly and Pat
  • Section: Sabre
  • Uniform: maroon, white & brown with white boots and high brown boots
  • Music: ?

Barbara Marsh-Clark Remembers

  • Year: 1968-1969
  • Instructors: Pat Longo
  • Section: Flag
  • Uniform: started out pink & brown pleats with white boots; then went to all pink with those great high brown riding boots. I remember we had to go to some sort of horseback riding place to get them.
  • Music: the only one I clearly remember was "Beethoven's 9th" ... Pat got the idea from the news show that used it. I also remember St. Anthony's having Ob La Di, Ob La Da that year.
  • Favorite Memories: performing at the half-time show for the Celtics at the Boston Garden ... I remember it being fun. They made us wear sneakers and wouldn't let us bang the flags on the floor during the routine. We were so relaxed because we weren't being judged and we did a great job ... I still remember the cheers from the crowd. Another memory: Mrs B got us all together at her house to hem up the new pink skirts. I had zero sewing experience and to this day, think of her every time I thread a needle. Other memories: Riding in the back of that old truck Mr. B used to use ... singing on the bus ... usually losing to St. Pat's in Stoneham and St. Anthony's in Everett ... then we started that Beethoven routine and things started to turn around ... Mr. B trying very hard to convince my mother not to pull me from Drill Team because she caught me smoking ... didn't work unfortunately; so I only had one year ... and last but not least is "Ted Hilton's trip."

Marjie Marino Remembers

  • Year: 1980

  • Section: Sabre
  • Uniform: Pink skirts and tops, maroon cumber bun, maroon hat with white feather
  • Music: Can Can year!
  • Favorite Memories: moving up to the Prep Guard from the juniors and being the youngest in the squad. Being scared to death to perform at WGI and then knowing I would probably age out after loving it!! I never dropped that year and I was so happy because Nancy used to charge us $$ when we dropped. I marched in St Therese from 1976 to 1986.

We ALL spent the whole time in our own little cliques; not liking anyone in a different one, but, what it comes down to is 'those girls were (are) my family and as much as we "hated" ear other we'd be lost without one another. The competitions (YOU may take the floor in competition!), eating salad in pita bread (still a fave of mine), putting on makeup and french-braiding on the bus headed to shows, getting in trouble in PA for not sleeping the night before (sorry Donna!, the parties we had at the end of the year, the trips to Canada, the banquets (I think we took all the medals one year) and the parents right along with us loving every minute of it ... we love you dear parents, dear parents, dear parents, we love you dear parents with ALL OF OUR HEART!

Terri Keefe-Grout sends her thoughts along ...

Hi ... I'm Terri Keefe (Grout). I'm living in Vero Beach, FL. (edited for privacy) I marched 1964 thru 1969 and was a sabre in Winterguard. I marched when we were still wearing white boots and doing the manual of arms at each completion. My fater, Larry Keefe (deceased) was an Assistant Manager of the Juniors 1964 & 1965. You'll also be hearing from my sisters who also marched. DeeDee Keefe, Ivy Keefe, Georgie Keefe (an article was in the Boston Globe about Georgie as the littlest twirler in STLF Juniors) and Colleen Keefe. The marching continued as both my daughters marched Drum Corps and Winterguard. My oldest also taught. It's a great activity! I have already reviewed pics in Colorguard Historical Society but there aren't any from my time (this was a few months ago). I might have a couple if I can find them. I hope others can find some.

And we had to ride home in the equipment truck. We sang songs and made the best of it! I personally rode in the flag bin. All our parents dressing up as clowns and putting on a show in 1991 was too funny! We also used to make up the most ridiculous cheers ... "STLF Winners," HaHa!

Denise Russell Remembers ...

  • Year: 1976 or 1977
  • Instructors: Nancy Lee
  • Section: Drill
  • Uniform: pink tops with brown cuffs. Pink pleated skirts. Brown riding boots.
  • Music: "The Wiz"
  • Favorite Memories: It was summer Drill Team season. We called this show Switcheroo! Generally the more experienced girls were in the colorguard and the younger less experienced were the Drill Team. We decided this year to switch. Since it was the summer and the judges focused more on the Drill Team, we thought this would give us an advantage. So the colorguard became the drillteam and the drillteam became the colorguard. I remember the first show and walking by some of the other corps on our way to the field. The shocked look on their faces was priceless. We had a lot of fun that summer!

  • Sections: Flag; Sabre; Drill
  • Uniform: Pink blouse with little flower emblem; brown pleated skirt; white boots in the drill team; the color guard had brown boots. We wore berets.
  • Music: My first recollection was to "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Then the last song I marched to was by the 5th Dimension ... "we hold these truths to be self evident" ... then it went into "Freedom Train" and we all had different colored streamers hidden in our cumberbunds.
  • Favorite Memories: I was in fourth grade. My sister, Diane Nelson, was an instructor, and my sisters Jackie and Roz Nelson were in the upper drill team and I was in the Jrs. I got to march in a lot of parades and then go back to the parish hall and have those sandwiches (ham and cheese) to celebrate completing 3 parades in one day. I still can't drive by Gilboy Stadium or think of the BC rink for the finals, and [not] smile. I remember climbing all those stairs and going to the chapel at BC to pray to win. AND the best part ... TED HILTONS!

Christine Auger Remembers ...

  • Year: 1982 - 1983
  • Instructors: Linda
  • Section: Rifle
  • Uniform: Burgundy polyester pants and top with velcro to keep it from opening. I think we wore a burgundy colored hat but I'm not sure.
  • Music: Earth Wind and Fire "Guiding Light" and Michael Jackson's "You've Got to be Starting Something"
  • Favorite Memories: I can remember being neck and neck with St. Mary's in Brookline the whole year. That was the year of Peter Pan. I can still sing the "I'm Flying" song by heart. I remember dropping my rifle during my captain's solo at the end of our routine and blaming myself for losing that day. Twenty five years later and I'm still feeling guilty. LOL
  • Editor's note: yes, you DID wear a burgundy colored hat and it had a pencil-thin elastic band to keep it on your head. I believe Mrs. Cummings got plenty of use out of her buttoneer gadget that year, replacing those elastic bands. If I can recall correctly, you girls hated the elastic and found many, many ways to "lose" them off of your hat; hence, Mrs. Cummings being right there to put yet another one on.

Patty Murray Remembers ...

  • Year: 1990
  • Instructors: Lisa Stornaielo, Denise Perry, Patty Murray
  • Uniform: navy blue jumpsuits with white sequins(?)
  • Music: "New Order - Queen - Yaz"
  • Favorite Memories: We were on a trip to Syracuse, NY in the middle of a freakish blizzard. Mr. "B" set his watch to "stop watch" to time how fast the service at Chili's was. He forgot to re-set his watch to regular time and woke me at 3:00 am insisting that we were late for the show the next day. I took him to the window and showed him the darkness of night, but he wouldn't let up. I had to find another clock as proof. Maybe it was the margaritas??? I had a lot of issues on that trip ... Good Times ...

  • Music: "Beethoven's 9th" and "When the Parade Passes By" stick out in my mind
  • Favorite Memories: I was just a baby back then. I was a "pistol" who guarded the American Flag and I can still tell you my entire drill. "Mark time 100 ... forward 50 ... squad right for 100 ... squad left 4 ... forward 100" and that was it!!! Life was so simple then.

Laurie Ferragamo Remembers ...

  • Favorite Memories: Anything with Christine Barbuto, Judi Wareham and Stacy McCully ... My first trip to Dayton. Breaking down on the way to Canada and being smuggled over the border ...
